Best CCRider ever. Also, great jams in the second set around a real jazzy Drums. Even better now that it's on CD !!!!

Bobby does an interesting "here comes the rain" type hiccup during Looks Like Rain. Dick's Picks Vol. 5 is a must have!
-

Certainly one of the best, if not the best, renditions of Uncle Johns Band!
Absolutely smokin!

My favorite Shakedown - Jerry's solo, Brents funky keyboards, nice slow and loping tempo - When I listen to it I can see that Shakedown dude walkin down the street.
-Joe In Portland

Great Uncle John's Band. A huge bomb by Phil to lead off The Other One. A really nice drums with a great outerspace jam to follow. And you can't beat the encore!

Has anyone heard a hotter Minglewood Blues than this one?

Please give me dates if so...

This was the first time I heard Alabama Getaway (had to be one of the first times they played it)At first the whole crowd looked around at each other as if saying what's this? But pretty soon the whole place was rockin'like we heard it for many years. Also -Jerry loved playin this song in the beginning. We were right up front all week ( 5 shows )and you could see how much he enjoyed it -at one point during a solo(possibly the 2nd time they played it that week)he got down to one knee and got more theatrical than I'd ever see him get.A truly great show- one of Dick's Pix

Listen to the outro from the final verse of The Other One into Drumz...Some of the coolest atonal pounding ever with all three guitars (i include bass as guitar) stomping the Budweiser out of a weirdly syncopated meltdown of over-the-top sick, sick, sickness. One of my fave mins. or two of Dead i ever heard. Sooo happy to have been in the house that night. My 7th show and a Dick's Picks (V) to boot. 1st FULL SHOW on the DP's releases. Alabama Getaway shows Garcia having way, way, lotsa fun.

jerry, jerry, jerry....you are sooooo high during he's gone!
-CLIFTONHANGAR (02/08/2010)

One of my favorite Dick's Picks. Brent's much derided "toy piano" sound is on showcase throughout this concert. I happen to love it, but others hate the "dynoed Rhodes" sound. Mmmmm...yeah...love that toy piano.
-Andrew (02/19/2012)

Pretty famous show; I've listened to it countless times since the early days of the Dick's Picks releases and still come back to it now and again...

Set 1 - "Well she married me a wife, I've been trouble all my life..." - with that Jer sets the pace lyrically for this show, which, let's face it, isn't exactly precision-point. But the level of playing here is simply awesome - allows you to forgive (or just plain forget) the atrocious problems in Brown-Eyed Women and Minglewood. That Alabama > Promised Land is one I've worn out listening to - wow!

Set 2 comes off much better - a long suite with every song hitting that '79 stride - dig the jam post-Estimated! Love He's Gone at this time, and check out Brent's super-spaceship-psychedelia on Space! Brokedown as the post-space ballad is unusual, and Shakedown ain't no filler - they jam it like it's the beginning of a 3rd set!

As others have noted, Alabama Getaway > Promised Land showcases Jerry, who just tears his solos apart. The chord riffing towards the end of Promised Land is fierce.
