Comments:

a great show which was rightfully granted its own dick's pick. the setlist is superb, with highlights coming with a near perfect WRS (the best i have ever heard), and a crinkly other one-spanish jam. mvp goes to phil for this show, he carries the band with improvisations and a steady fram thrughout some great jamming.

Clear, Warm, and it just grooves....
-Jbloom

Smooth China cat sunflower > I know you rider. NICE NICE NICE!
-

Without a doubt one of the top shows of all time. The China>Rider goes down as the best version ever in my opinion. I had an old hissy audience copy of this show for years and listened to it religiously. Needless to say I was ecstatic when it made Dicks picks.
-

A GREAT, repeat GREAT, stand alone EYES for the encore; how fitting. Another vote here for the absolutely best China>Rider ever, with a fabulous intro jam to China Cat.
-

An outstanding show! The jam>China>Rider is my favorite of all time, not a frivolous distinction. Nice jaming at the end of Let It Grow too. How about the Truckin'>Other One Jam>Spanish Jam! The only thing left toplay was Eyes as an encore. Too Much. Don't forget, this comes chronologically right after the epic Miami show...

second set is part of DP12 and it is just sick. the mellow noodling is perfect. best china/rider i have ever heard. phil drops bombs all night long to fry your brain. get this DP if you dare. (note: not for the faint of heart. you really need years of dead to enjoy this one) enjoy :^))
-Ga-DeadHead

The GA-Dead-Head was on the right track when he steered me into this one brother. By far my favorite Weather Report Suite of all time. The jam afterwards is just sick. Row Jimmy is also at the very top of the list as well. I can't say enough about this one except run out right now and buy Dick's Picks 12 or you'll be sorry.
-

An eerie jam unfolds into, and I have to agree, the absolute BEST China>Rider ever. They jam on the opening riff for five minutes! Plus, real nice Spanish Jam with some great Phil soloing right before it. Eyes encore! In the top three of my favorite shows.

It's ironic the 2 best Dead shows I have seen out of 100+ shows happened to be in Providence. This show was almost as good as their first RI show in 1971 at an old hockey rink. The best China-Rider you'll ever hear, Eyes of the world was PRIMO!!!!
-

this 2nd set is amazing. if anyone has the SBD of this show that was on the archive and will trade me a copy please email me. i love my Dicks picks 12 CD but i really want this 1st set that i have not had the privelage to hear yet. all help is greatly appreciated. peacee

The band always played great at the Providence Civic Center, which was not a very charming venue. This show is probably the best of the bunch.
-Doug (12/01/2011)

I am a huge China/Rider fan and this version it the pinnacle!!
- (04/08/2012)

we were there on our bus; bob & bill peeked in, but they had no tickets. although the venue was something conceived by a then-soviet committee, the folks were nice.
-DenMan (08/02/2012)

Any show with a Beer Barrel Polka is ok with me.

-80s head (01/09/2013)

Bobby throws in Heaven Help teaser melody towards the end of the jam into Wharf Rat; one of my go-to summer-listening shows.
-Brandon L. (07/17/2017)

Phil is incredible throughout the Eyes encore. China Cat > Rider is an all timer, and Spanish Jam and Wharf Rat are fantastic as well. Nothing wrong with this one at all.
-Just Exactly Perfect Band (08/03/2018)

Jam > China Cat might be one of my all-time one-two punches. Just beautiful.

Wow...what an amazing show! The second set is one of my favorite sets... bet it was great being there (I was only 9 at the time) especially after Sugar Magnolia when the audience goes NUTS!
- (05/08/2020)

Nice Show. Great Feelin Groovy in the China > Rider.

Phil and Ned push the Wall of Sound to the max. Great listen.

the band was tight- the goddamn short notes are awesome.

EYES - what a sweet exit, so sincere , optimistic

Coming out of Truckin there is a Nobody's Fault But Mine tease before the Other One tease... They were going into Nobody's Fault out of Truckin around this time so it was a sly one...
So they tease twice then fly into one of the spaciest Spanish Jams ever.
This show is top notch and tight start to finish. The first set is a good one and the second set is an all time great.
The audience is absolutely nuts too - get the Hunter's Trix matrix copy...
This show has single handedly dragged me back into 74 after months lost in 77...
- (02/28/2022)

Today is the 50th anniversary of this show.

I love China>Rider, and the Jam>Chinacat Sunflower>Jam>I Know You Rider is my favorite.
