This was my first show, sat on the floor in the Phil Zone, and had a GRATE time! I listen to the show regularly, and it is a gem.

This was my first Dead show. My best friend and I came down from Oklahoma City, as we had done about a year earlier to see the Doors in Dallas. I have several memories of the show -- memories meaningful to me, but not necessarily interesting to anyone else.
It was in a small auditorium, and tickets were 4 and 5 dollars, with two levels of general admission. We just bought the cheaper tiks at the door. When we got inside, it turns out that little old ladies (no joke) were guarding the rail that separated the seats, so we just climbed over into the front with many other fans.

New Riders opened. Garcia casme out before the show and tuned the pedal steel, but Jerry didn't sit in during the set. (Buddy Cage played it, and he was superb.) Could have driven the four hours home after their set and would have been happy.

When the Dead were getting ready, Phil came out first. Someone in the crowd had set a huge joint on the piano, and Phil started joking (unamplified), "Looks like a f** banana!" and "Never touch the stuff myself."
Then they played a kickass show, and I'm still hooked 37 years later. For many years, I assumed I'd never hear this show, but of course the Internet changed that.
