Comments:

Many of the circulating tapes of this show are mixed with Weir far in the background and Jerry in the foreground, although Weir's playing is still audible and awesome. The band is obviously feeling it in a huge way ... perhaps the weather was just right or they were just happy to be in the Northern Californian sticks with the folks in Chico.

In any event, with the possible exception of Live Dead and the Avalon show a couple weeks prior to this one, no tape so perfectly captures the fantastic warmth of the beautiful analog equipment the Dead were using to generate their sound. The overtones that spring from the reverb in Garcia's amp are hallucinatory by themselves and, given the odd mix, are exceptionally vivid.

The circulating tapes I have heard include some harsh edits. Large portions of the show are missing but the portions of Dark Star and Cryptical (especially the latter) which remain are powerful evidence that 1968 was a hell of a year. Unfortunatley, shortly after this period the Dead manage to distract themselves with Tom Constanten who, while not the worst keyboardist to join the band, never could provide the solid polyrhythmic end-of-the-world backup that the alchohol-fueled Pig delivered virtually ever time he played.

Pigpen not in band in October 68-"immature behavior"
-Perrinswolf (04/11/2007)

The worst thing about this tape is the cut in New Potato. When Phil's bass solo fuzzes out you can tell it's going to be a classic version that we'll never hear until we can go back in time.

@perrinswolf. Pigpen is on this tape and also appears on 10/20/68. He sings lead on Alligator and Caution on this show.
