The sky opened up during the Cold Rain. Really spooky!

This was my first show! It blew me away.
-

This was my first show EVER, if I recall correctly it was a dual bill with Dylan/Petty and the Heartbreakers. What a great day!!
-

Wheel>Miracle>UJB were broadcast on Farm Aid. Not bad considering Jerry's health.
-

Bob Weir told the crowd "It doesn't rain on the Fourth of July" The crowd roared it's approval and then it dumped on us if my memory serves me well. Was my first show as well and I loved it.
-M S Clark

Anyone remember the awesome group of jugglers at the back of the floor that day? There were about 8 of them throwing pins back and forth in pairs during Fire, going to the music. They were inCREDible!

Honestly don't remember the rain, must have been having too much fun for any downers! But I do remember a killer Touch of Grey (pre-In The Dark) just a blastin' out of those tower speakers. Really got me movin', and couldn't beleive that was the end of the set - seemed super short! But they made up for it 2nd...

I walked in backwards like I was walking out!

Technically, this show should be listed at Orchard Park, NY...as are '89, '90, '92 and '93.
-TroubleAhead

Yep, I remember the jugglers - they were amazing :)
-bobby geeWOW

Yes, I remember this show. It was July 4th, and I was intent on getting out of NYC because of all the commercialism surrounding the Statue of Liberty 100th Anniversary celebration.

Dylan, Dead, Tom Petty. It was festival seating and desperately hot. I remember it as a good quality show, even though Jerry was just days away from his diabetic coma. Not the greatest, but well worth the road trip.

We camped in a gigantic field adjacent to the stadium, and seven of us lived on a package of hot dogs and some bread. Huge bonfire and fireworks that night. Great fun all around.

We were going to drive back to NYC the next day, but instead kept on heading south to the next show (either Washington or Philly...I can't remember now). We picked up more hot dogs and survived for another three days.

Was this stadium once in Buffalo and then they moved it to nearby Orchard Park?

How do you even move a football stadium of this size?

I'm assuming they moved it because this is the only listing for Rich Stadium, Buffalo while shows at Rich Stadium after this were in Orchard Park.

So they moved the whole stadium?

Or the listing is wrong?
-Rich (01/01/2008)

Will this get answered? Was this stadium in Buffalo but they moved the entire stadium to Orchard Park?

Or perhaps it was in Buffalo but Buffalo gave that land to Orchard Park after 7/4/86?

Or was the stadium goddamn ALWAYS in Orchard Park and the listing is just fucking wrong?
-rich (01/04/2008)

Yes, Rich, the stadium has always been in Orchard Park, which is a suburb of Buffalo. Perhaps you should lay off the meth and chill.

This was my second show and having eaten a couple of sugar cubes, my memories are a little warbled. But, as this was just days before Jerry's coma, the playing is pretty bad. It was also a pretty strange day. Fights at the stadium. My buddy Tim H. had a really bad trip after getting lost for the beginning of the show. Sun, then rain, then cool sunset, then a nice summer evening. Overall, not a great show, but a very interesting experience.

Yes, Dylan w/ T. Petty closed the show. I remember, I left after the Dead. Fire/Mtn. was great! How they can always keep it interesting with a song that only has 2 chords. Farm Aid broadcast Samson/Wheel/Miracle. Dupree's....1st one in 23 shows, and 1 of only 4 in '86.

We camped out in Canada for this show. We went to the falls the night before and thats when things got strange. We saw Billy and Micky walk by us. We caught up to them and said hello. Not long after that did I look over and see Bobby wearing a pin striped jacket standing by the falls. I went into some kind of trance as I walked over to him shook his hand and was speechless. I was 17 and he was my idol at the time. If I could meet him again I would actually have something to say.
-Cosmic Charlie (04/16/2010)

Cool camping scene walking distance from Rich Stadium...couldn't get the car out until the next day. Afternoon show, the band was out of sorts. Show was a clunker. Dylan & Petty closed.
-Anonymous (07/24/2010)

I was one of those jugglers at this show. It was an amazing time.
-Anonymous (04/05/2014)

I remember this show, a bunch of us camped next to the stadium. Left after the show, my friend and I both thought that the show was weak and there was something wrong with jerry. We left when the crowd got ugly after the dead left the stage. I remember Bobby remarking about our country was 210 years old and lets keep that wheel a going just before breaking into the wheel.

I think this show is really good and well played considering Jerry's problems. He looks so much healthier than in 85. Lost weight and actually has some color to his face. And the setlist is killer.
-Anonymous (12/12/2014)

If I remember correctly, Dylan/Petty opened and the Dead came on afterwards because I remember commenting that the sound wasn’t that good at the start and then the Dead came on and it was like the system got upgraded. My only Dead show, the first of 6 times seeing Petty and the first of 3 times seeing Dylan.
- (08/24/2018)

What a monster setlist!

Have always loved this show for that. Plus Jerry looks happy and healthy considering his coma a few weeks later.

Farm Aid?

I was at the top of the stadium as the sun was setting. In every direction you could see all the fireworks celebrations starting in every town and village for miles all around. Also, before the show I was running around in the fields. My shins got scratched up because I was wearing shorts. Late in the show, after it was dark, I jumped from the stands down onto the field right into a puddle in the corner of the end zone. My shin scratches started to burn. I think I must've jumped into a puddle of pee.

The funny thing about it , is that after all these years there are many things I remember. We all called it ,”Rich Stadium,” I believe that was even on my ticket. Some people said there were 80,000 people in there, I didn’t try to count us all. But it sure was really crowded on the grass, only place to breathe easy was all the way up at the top of the stadium where people sat and smoked ~ well, either you know or you don’t. Petty took over after the Dead , and I & nearly everyone else left ...
Good Show , Spring tour was definitely much hotter.

Was my first time seeing the Dead. We were in the upper deck, stage left, so we had a great view of the jugglers. Yes, there was a torrential T-storm! While most people ran for cover, me and my friends stayed out in the rain, and "upgraded" our seats to the first row of the upper deck, since it was general admission. Was also my first time seeing Dylan, as well as Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. I now have great recordings of the Dead and Dylan/Petty.
