my first show...i sure wish i could find this tape or just the song list..jerry opened playing pedal steel with NRPS

i just added a setlist to this one, taken from the tape i have, the first song (Cold Rain & Snow) cuts in, so i can't tell for sure if there was anything before it, though that is a normal song for them to open with so probably not. also, if there was an encore, it is not on my tape and therefore i don't know what it was, although they ended by saying "that's All the time we have" and then they announced some upcoming shows, it really sounded like they were ending the show there.

it was the one and only time i ever saw the grateful dead. nrps opened with garcia on steel and krutzman on drums. i only remember some of the show. the songs i remember them doing were: johnny b. goode, operator, love light, big boss man. i also remember that the band didn't understand that the showtime limit in pittsburgh for concerts was 11:00p.m.! they thought that was kind of funny. garcia was using a red sg and wier ws suing a guild electric. pigpen was still touring strong at the time.

it has been a long strange trip...they also did truckin', casey jones and a gang of jammin'.

Overall 3.5/5

Vintage rock ‘n roll Dead.

Set 1 was short and sweet. The new songs hopped and are well rehearsed but short and very vanilla. Disappointed H2H is cut short on the tape. Pig’s songs are definitely the highlight.

Set 2 is where this show earns its stripes. Truckin starts to preheat the oven and gets the joint rockin. Interesting to note TO1 displaces Dark Star in ‘71 as the band’s flagship exploratory vehicle before the ‘72 high-water mark of DSs. This TO1 is solid but nothing to write home about compared to TO1s of ‘71. Very good early WR that starts to get its legs and is jammed out a bit.

One of the best early Sugars. I’d say it’s in the running for the best pre-Keith versions out there. Deal is very subdued and lacks what makes the song great. It’s the only redeeming quality is Garcia’s solo, which is mighty fine. NFA>GDTRFB>Lovelight always can stand on its own two feet. Highlights: Truckin, Sugar, and NFA>GDTRFB>Lovelight.

Great show overall. Nothing that makes it official release worthy but one of the bright spots from a rather lackluster month (April ‘71).

The saloon band at its finest. Loud, sloppy and lots of fun. Sam Cutler having a tantrum about the curfew at the end of the show is a nice highlight.
